Hi Team
The plugin is not working at all. It seems like an alpha release. We're using 2.8 with crowdrender, most of the time sync fails, it's unable to connect to the nodes. Then we restart blender in all nodes and it suddenly starts working. When it starts working, things like textures go missing. On systems where we've changed controls to Maya controls, the plugin has just disappeared. Even if you try installing again, it just doesn't show up. We wasted 2 days figuring out that plugin doesn't work.
You should state on the website that plugin has these known issues.
Hi James, I've sent an email with the file. I'll be sharing logs shortly. I have high hopes from this plugin and if this project is one of your main projects then it's time you move fast in development with the help of the community.
Hi James, I've tried most of the solutions above. Here are few things I'm facing challenge with - Consistent sync failures. Sometimes sync happen and sometimes they fail when you re-sync - Plugin disappears if we change the controls
- Textures go missing even if we pack everything in the .blend file. Can you please suggest what I should try next? Or should I share the file with you so you can test at your end?
Hi Aditya,
I'm sorry to hear you didn't get the software to work well. Here's some things to bear in mind/try
Ok, first, yes its an alpha, there will be issues, the fact that the software is at the alpha stage is mentioned on our website, on the home page, see image below
Second, we'd love to know if you looked at the documentation on our website, did this help at all. I ask cause you didn't mention it. Is that because it wasn't helpful in telling you about the limitations? Did it miss important steps or was is it confusing?
Third, we've never tested the addon with Maya controls activated. No one has ever asked us for this if I am honest. So its not something people have told us they need. Crowdrender is software that is for the community, its not perfect by any means, and will have use cases we've not tested. This is one of those cases, so thanks for bringing it to our attention, now we can test this and see what the issue is! There are so many different combinations of addons and settings that its hard to cover every single one by ourselves.
Fourth, we're happy to help out the moment you have trouble. I am impressed you spent two whole days trying to get the software to work! It shows you have lots of persistence. But please, in future, reach out to us before you spend a lot of time trying to debug our addon.
By the way, you can fix most sync failures by saving your file, and simply re-opening it. If that doesn't work, just resend the file and then try doing the same save and re-open trick. I've found this fixes most problems we have with sync fails.
Fifth, your textures are missing most likely because you didn't pack them into the blend file. Almost every distributed rendering system I can think of requires you to do this. So do we, there is a video tutorial we did that explains how to do this, which will apply to all render farm/ distributed rendering software, so no matter what software you eventually end up using, I'd recommend you take a look since you may end up with the same problem again, which would likely be very frustrating for you. Here is the link to that video. You'll lose nothing by watching it, I promise https://youtu.be/ttZVSYKFcgE
Finally, we do try to make sure that bugs are brought to the attention of everyone using the software as soon as possible, that's what this forum is for, so you've done the right thing in posting your problem here, but please remember, the issues you are having, we've not had ourselves so we couldn't possibly have told you about them in advance! Also your description makes it hard to pin down what you did, so its hard to actually suggest a potential cause and what you could try. It might really help if you can give us a set of steps you took that always cause the problem to happen, then we have a chance of re-creating the problem here and that usually always leads to a fix.
We are just three people here at Crowdrender, so we can't test everything. We work in our spare time as best we can to make this addon. When people come to us with problems, we do our best to fix the issues that cause them, or find a work around.
I can feel your frustration and I understand it, no one likes software that doesn't fix their problem. But that frustration needs to be tempered by the fact that the software is:
1. free
2. still an alpha
My commitment is to now go and make the fact that the software is in alpha more clear, I did look at the website and I think its perhaps not clear enough. So we will make some changes there. All I ask of you is to bear with us, we are sincere, we do want to make the best render farm software, please be patient, we're not there yet.
Personally I invite you to stick around, there are a lot of positive things happening here, we're re-designing the whole addon for the beta version. This is thanks to lots of users leaving their feedback and testing for us. Pretty soon we hope to have solved sync fail for good and make the addon a whole lot more stable.
Wishing you all the best
James
