Ok, just had a very quick look at Octane, it has a similar structure to cycles in terms of how its been integrated into blender, but there are differences in the render passes. So might not work out of the box, but will have a go at starting a render to see whats up.
@Matt Brooks The activation server shouldn't be an issue, so long as you do run such a server on each node. The main issue will be the render passes are different, which we explicitly handle in our addon for cycles.
The plan is that we'll support whatever is in demand really. We're rebuilding our addon (though I have to admit the rebuilding has been taking a hell of a lot longer than I'd have liked thanks to life being life) and it will be a lot more capable of serving other addons, and definitely other render engines.
Also Octane would be a good choice since its very similar to cycles in how its been integrated with Blender. I was actually surprised they didn't just go with an addon, but actually released their own build of blender.
Hi Matt, not sure as we've not tried this ourselves. We have managed to get lux render and RenderMan to work though so it is technically possible. The only things that might be in question are render passes. We currently support the passes that cycles uses, which are likely to be different to Octane to some extent.
I see there is a demo version available so I will check it out today and let you know how successful (or not) just using it is. You can also try this yourself by simply opening blender, selecting Octane as the render engine, then going to the crowdrender panel and pressing render still.
