The python error you get is likely due to you being on linux and using one of the latest builds of blender I'm assuming?
If thats correct, Blender has been upgrading the version of python they use inside their application. We're going to release our next version soon and it should support these later versions of python, for now, you could try using the official 2.79a or b release which I believe we tested with v0.1.4. These version should work.
Otherwise, we should be releasing v0.1.5 in two to three weeks from now, which we're going to make sure works.
